Promoting Communal Land Tenure Security in Kotido District, Karamoja, Uganda

The project “Promoting Communal Land Tenure Security in Kotido District, Karamoja, Uganda” seeks to advance inclusive conflict transformation anchored in justice, equity, and reconciliation by addressing both past grievances and present vulnerabilities. While youth cattle rustlers have been disarmed, their lack of alternative livelihoods and psychosocial support poses risks to sustainable peace, making reintegration essential. At the same time, environmental degradation driven by climate change, reduced cattle herds, and unproductive agriculture has forced communities into destructive coping strategies such as charcoal burning, further depleting land resources by promoting climate-sensitive skills, income-generating activities, and secure land tenure to foster regenerative livelihoods. Gender inequality also perpetuates cycles of violence, with patriarchal norms restricting women’s rights and opportunities. To counter this, engaging men and traditional institutions, encourages peer exchange, and leverages community interests to transform gender norms, ensuring empowerment and equality as foundations for lasting peace and development.
